Abstract:

Contains typewritten carbon copies of mostly English language correspondence (8 letters, 33 p.) concerning relief efforts after a large earthquake struck Guatemala City. Includes correspondence between the chairman of the Red Cross Canal Zone Committee sent to Guatemala, Samuel W. Heald, and Guatemalan officials, including the president, Manuel Estrada Cabrera. Two of the letter copies are signed by Heald; one is signed by Cabrera. Includes letters from the superintendant of the Cattle Industry Division (Panama Canal), W.B. Brown, ordering the ship SS Caribbean to pick up and deliver relief supplies to Guatemala, a presentation of the committee to the president of Guatemala, an official report to the Governor of the Panama Canal, Colonel Chester Harding, and an official note (in Spanish) on letterhead stationery signed by the Secretary of War of Guatemala, [Luis] Ovalle, on behalf of committee member, J.H.K. Humphries. Also includes two English translation copies (from Spanish) from the president of Guatemala to Heald. One letter, signed by Cabrera, expressing gratitude for the relief assistance, and a second letter, unsigned, describing his gift to Heald of a personally treasured sword in appreciation for the efforts of the committee. Also Includes two handwritten accounts of the relief efforts by unidentified committee members and one portrait photograph (8x10, b & w) of a group of men in a hotel lobby [likely Red Cross Canal Zone committee members and other officials].
